Virtuous Bridesmaid Jailed For Doing The Right Thing

January 27, 2017 (Fault Lines) — The saying “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” apparently hit poor Amanda Willis hard during the wedding of her friends, Brian and Jennifer Butler. The alleged “happy couple” would ruin Willis’ evening by ignoring her own feelings of loss and regret, setting off a drunken rampage that landed Willis in jail.

Amanda Willis agreed to serve as maid of honor for Jennifer Butler’s wedding in Punta Gorda, Florida, earlier this month. Apparently, the soon-to-be Mrs. Butler was a bit of a Bridezilla during the wedding preparations. What else would cause a twenty-three-year old to harbor such resentment against a trusted friend?

Regardless of your thoughts concerning the wedding, once the reception began, it was clear Ms. Willis couldn’t take the abuse she’d suffered at the hands of the new Mrs. Butler anymore. It was as if she saw her former friend as “literally Hitler,” and found solace solely in booze.

The Maid of Honour got smashed on hard booze just 20 minutes into the reception and completely ruined the big day.

“She was a mess. She drank almost a whole entire bottle of Fireball (whisky),” said wedding guest Robert Templeton.

Putting aside the patriarchal, white cis-heteronormative values of Mr. Templeton, what gives him the right to deny the agency of Ms. Willis by saying she was “a mess”? Does he not think her feelings about being denied her own happy attempt at a marital life were warranted? Is he the type of person who would condone violence against another because he disagreed with Ms. Willis’s views on marriage and family? Apparently, the answer is yes.

As the night progressed, Willis asked the guests give her their car keys, eventually stealing the best man’s when he refused.

“She just went up to the best man and grabbed his keys out of his pocket and jumped in his car,” said Templeton.

She then drove off in his car and nearly hit the best man — Brian’s brother, David — when he tried to stop her from backing out of the parking spot.

In fairness, it appears Ms. Willis simply wanted to make sure guests at the party didn’t run afoul of Punta Gorda police. No one needs the added costs of a DUI charge, and Amanda wanted to make sure the party guests got home safe. The fact the best man was in the way of Amanda’s attempt to make it home safely further justifies her desire to drink more.

She went back inside. She grabbed up the big bottle of Captain Morgan [rum] and just guzzled it…

No one can besmirch Amanda Willis’ character for wanting to make sure partygoers got home safely. When David Butler decided to get in Willis’ way, it’s easy to say he deserved potentially getting run over for putting a good time ahead of wedding guests safety. Yet, David Butler isn’t the one facing criminal charges. It’s poor Amanda Willis.

The wild bridesmaid now faces charges of larceny, battery, grand theft of a motor vehicle and violation of probation. It was her ninth arrest in the county.

Nine arrests in Punta Gorda? Larceny, Grand Theft Auto, and more? The Butler family is surely to blame for this. Prosecutors need to drop all charges and free Amanda Willis for doing the right thing, even if she was sauced in the process.

I’m just going to point out that any flavored drink (i.e., Fireball) is not a whisky. I’ll also note that it is from Canada, where the cold affects the inhabitants in strange ways…
